Emotional distance, the first of these reasons, is named as the reason for many breakups. The complaint? “He doesn’t pay enough attention to me, we don’t communicate enough.” What do women want? It’s a question that’s been asked for centuries, and whatever answers have been given always seem to fall short. In a relationship, a woman wants to have her sense of worth fortified by her man. If, at the end of the day, she doesn’t feel that sense of worth, she’ll blame her man no matter what he’s actually done. A woman who feels her man isn’t doing his part is a woman who’ll look for a man who’ll stay emotionally close to her.

The second reason women will cheat on their men is neglect. That’s logical, but it’s still fraught with pitfalls. The man who’s always underfoot, always in his woman’s face, will before long be considered to be clingy: too dependent, too needy, too immature – and too replaceable. She’ll feel claustrophobic. On the other hand, however, when a man understands that he’s got to give his woman time on her own to grow, and enhance those things he loves about her, she might decide he doesn’t really care. She might decide he’s ignoring her, and she’ll use that space to find another man.

Women, like men, need to have a reasonable sense of self-esteem, and they expect their men to provide a great deal of it. Even though they’re no longer dating, they want their men to continue the “courtship behavior” of complimenting their appearance. As frustrating as it may be to you, she’ll try to get from another man the boost to her self-esteem she feels she’s not getting from you. While most men understand a woman’s need for self-esteem and try to reinforce it, if a woman feels she’s not getting enough attention in this area, chances are good she’s going to cheat.

Finally, a woman is likely to betray her man if she simply feels bored and needs a change of scene. Like a monkey swinging in the trees who won’t let go of one branch until there’s another to grab, she’s content to go about the motions of staying in a relationship when in reality, she’s already written it off and is looking for a new man. A woman who remains in a relationship for the emotional (and financial) security, rather than honestly ending it and establishing herself as a single woman on her own, isn’t going to solve any problems by darting from one relationship to another.

Regardless of the reason a woman gives for cheating on her man, the awkward truth is that they probably weren’t suited to each other. How can a man continue to love a woman who regards him so lightly she’ll betray him?Any woman who comes to the conclusion that she’s not getting what she needs from you, and that she’s thus justified in cheating on you, doesn’t deserve to be with you in the first place.
